How to choose solitaire diamond ear studs
Diamond ear studs are probably the most popular diamond earrings and quiet high in the overall jewelry popularity. The classic diamond studs are single diamonds set in a basket type four claw setting with extended pin and push on butterfly fitting.
The most popular shape is round and this make sense as they are the only diamond shape that does not need positioning and look right no matter how much they turn. Square diamond shapes like princess, radiant and cushion also have moderate demand especially when intended as a part of a jewelry set.
The settings are usually in high carat gold or platinum. The weight of the stud settings is rather small, even in the case of large diamonds, thus making the platinum the obvious choice for white metal. The difference in price will be insignificant but the difference in strength and safety and quality - vast.
Some of the white gold alloys contain nickel which can cause allergic reaction. If you are buying white gold alloy diamond stud settings make sure they are nickel free. For the gold alloys the higher the karat, the better.
The classic four claw setting is used for diamonds from 0.1 carat to large diamonds of 2 ct. and more. My opinion is however that diamonds under 1/5 of a carat should be used in bezel setting or other setting that optically increases the size.
When the stone is over a carat is not a bad idea to use 6 claw setting in order to avoid thick claws, but only in gold settings. This is another advantage of the platinum studs – they could be made very delicate and retain their strength. The best classic diamond ear stud are the one that show as little metal as possible and platinum is the perfect precious metal for this purpose
